Thanks Bill and Pam!
Sorry to give you all two newsletters back to back but I had one of those “I did something stupid” moments you just have to share so people don’t repeat your mistakes.
I have often bragged that our house never gets robbed, our kids don’t get taken etc. because we have a lot of Dobermans around. This letter is to emphasize that dogs are only as good as you enable them to be. Naturally we spend a lot of time training our dogs for search work, tracking protection etc. Well at my wife’s family reunion over the 4th I had all my dogs there as we camped over, and in the middle of the night some “burglars” were rummaging through camp. Now we had just given a protection demonstration earlier in the day and talked about the dogs, but they were in the tent sleeping with me across the campground from where this was going on. They woke up a few family members and tried to find the “burglars” in the dark, and then what were they going to do? No one thought to wake me and the dogs who are trained to track and bark and hold until the police show up, but I slept soundly knowing I was safe! Anyway yesterday I went to the lake with the family for a few hours, and I put the dogs in the back yard while we were gone. I almost left one of them in the front yard ( it is fenced as well) but didn’t want to risk someone letting them out or stealing them or whatever. Anyway, for the first time in my life, someone stole something right out of my front yard, in broad daylight! I still can’t believe it happened, it is a pretty good neighborhood, and the dogs were for sure barking just right through the fence, but they know not to climb or jump fences and I still sit here and wonder, all the training I do, and the amazing dogs I have and two times this month they could have used their skills, and didn’t. What good did all the training do other than entertain me? The point is, if we are counting on the dogs to protect us or our property, they have to have access to us and the property. If a young lady needs the dog to protect her from a stalker for example would she go running without the dog? Would she sleep with the dog locked in a kennel? Just things to consider about how we live with our Dobes and what we expect from them. I did a stupid thing, and was upset with the consequences, naturally you are all smarter than me and won’t repeat it right ![]()
